Guest column: Policymakers must ensure confidentiality of health records

Iowa helps guide the nation in selecting a president. Now, it can set an example for the country by establishing high standards for protecting health privacy.
Gov. Chet Culver recently signed legislation on health care that included a provision to establish the Iowa Health Information Technology System. The Iowa Department of Public Health and an advisory council will determine the standards to govern Iowa’s emerging health information technology system. It is vital that Iowa’s citizens let state policymakers know they want stringent protections implemented in this emerging system to protect their health privacy.
